The MSC is an international non-profit environmental and scientific NGO. The MSC has several missions: to contribute to the health of the oceans by promoting sustainable fishing practices, to influence consumer choice in the purchase of seafood products and to work with partners to make the seafood market more sustainable.
The Marine Stewardship Council is committed to using their label and fisheries certification scheme to help improve the health of the oceans. Sustainable fishing practices are recognized and rewarded to help guide consumers in their choices. For 20 years, fisheries, scientists, consumers and industry have been working collectively to make fishing more sustainable. Today, 15% of wild fish catches are MSC certified. To maintain their certification, the fisheries in the MSC program have so far made more than 1,600 improvements, including improvements in fishing practices, knowledge development and fisheries management.
To date, more than 40,000 company sites, supermarkets, school canteens and restaurants are certified and offer more than 50,000 MSC-labelled products worldwide.
