The ultimate aim of SUMARIS will be to put forward a sustainable and cross-border management strategy for ray stocks.


Following the introduction of the new Common Fisheries Policy, professional fishermen must from now on land juvenile rays which do not meet the size criteria to be authorised for sale. To adress this issue, FROM Nord launched the European project SUMARIS - Sustainable Management of Rays & Skates in July 2017 with funding from INTERREG 2 Seas.

The partners involved in the project are hoping to expand our biological and geographical knowledge of the different species, and thereby allow for sustainable management of rays wich will reflect the actual situation of the different stocks that are present in the region.

For three years, the partners in the project will work together to test new release methods which the biology and the resource of rays in the English Channel and the North Sea.
